Nā Hōkū Hoʻokele - The Values that Guide Our Way
We use instruction, discussion, and group activities in the beginning of the school year to review the importance of the stars (hōkū) that guide us in our daily decision making. For example...
Papa ʻEwalu Waʻa Camp with KVA, in the words of a few 8th graders, helps to "prepare us for defense...and taught us how to kōkua and learn from each other," and taught them that, "in order to carry the kuleana of 'aloha kekahi i kekahi' to our kula and kūpuna, my fellow classmates and I need to work together to carry our ʻauamo as one."
Initiative and Risk-Taking. Our newest friends have taken the leap into kindergarten and their first year at Mālama Honua. They come with incredible energy and enthusiasm for learning.
Environmental Awareness and Civic Responsibility. Haumana have jumped right into learning and taking care of their outdoor classrooms. Areas that they will be learning with and from over the course of the year benefited from some much needed aloha.
Confident Cultural Identity. Haumana across campuses started hula, oli, ʻolelo Hawaiʻi and hana noʻeau. Learning through doing, we learn through multiple modalities the rich history and beauty of our Hawaiian culture.
Communication and Collaboration. Each class took time over the last couple of weeks to build pilina, laying a solid foundation for haumana and kumu to work together over the course of the year to accomplish their individual and classʻ learning goals.
