As we celebrate the birth of Mōʻīwahine Liliuʻokalani on September 2nd, we are inspired by her words of determination and call to action, E ʻonipaʻa kākou (Be steadfast, established, firm, resolute and determined). This week we asked our 7th graders to share their reflections inspired by Mōʻī Liliʻu.
"When I heard about the history behind Ulupō I had made it my mission to help make that space thrive and I was determined to help out and make the most impact I could out of the time we were working there. Weeding the loʻi kalo might not have been the biggest job ever, but some small jobs can make a bigger impact in the future and that is their goal. At the end of the day it was all worth the sweat and stepping on rocks." --Kaia Clemens
"E ʻonipaʻa kākou." When we visited the loʻi kalo I was determined to pull out all the weeds and yucky stuff so that the kalo can keep growing more and more. By growing kalo it gives us food that we can eat, but also gives back to the community." --Lena Nahinu
