This week, Papa Mahina (grades 1/2) explored the question, Where does our food come from? by visiting Kailua Peopleʻs Open Market and several grocery stores. They examined the differences between local and non-local produce and were given a challenge: Find a fresh fruit or vegetable that could feed their entire group with a budget of only $5.

During the grocery store visits, some haumāna were surprised by the cost of certain produce. One group initially wanted to buy strawberries but quickly realized they couldnʻt afford them as the price was $10, double their budget.

Back at kula, the haumāna reflected on their experiences. One group was wondering where all the produce at the grocery stores come from? How much of it is local? Another group wondered about how grocery stores import the food. This experience sparked thoughtful discussions about food sourcing and consumer choices.
