papa eono with nainoa

Papa ʻEono

Papa ‘Eono got to interview Nainoa Thompson. We got to learn new things about him and his relationship with Papa Mau. He told us a story about how originally, the title of “PWO navigator” was reserved for kāne following a 4,000 year kapu in Micronesia.  In his experience, the best students in his classes were wāhine.  When Nainoa asked Papa Mau if he could give the title of “PWO navigator” to a wahine, he said no.  Conflicted, Nainoa didnʻt know what to do.  Before he left to go back home to Hawaii, Nainoa went to see Papa Mau again.  Papa Mau was not doing well, and Nainoa knew it would be the last time they would see each other.  Papa Mau told him, “Donʻt worry, you will always see me when you sail.  You will find me in the lightning.  Donʻt say goodbye, I will see you in the ocean.” As Nainoa turned to leave, Papa Mau said, “Nainoa, you want to give PWO to wāhine?”  Nainoa said yes, that the wāhine deserved it.  Papa Mau said, “Up to you.”  Papa Mau couldnʻt break the 4,000 year kapu, but his parting words allowed Nainoa to do so.
