Our first and second grade students showcased their learning and skills with Mahina Chopped. Keiki have been learning about kula as farmable lands, traditional farming/food production (kalo patches), current food related issues, food security and benefits of buying/supporting locally sourced products, and how our future actions/choices can have a positive impact on our community. Keiki received Community Supported Agriculture (csa) bags of fresh Waimānalo vegetables, herbs, and products. In our research groups, students categorized the items, discovered new information and “fun facts”, looked up recipes, washed, prepared, and cooked new dishes, and finally enjoyed sharing and eating their work with the class.
